In 5th grade, all students are introduced to both band and orchestra instruments as part of the music program. Sixth grade students then choose to play in the band, the orchestra, or choir. Students who choose to continue their music education in band at the Shaker Middle School play an instrument in one of the concert bands. They may also choose to play in jazz band.
At the high school level, there is the marching band, jazz ensemble, and several concert bands. Some of the bands require auditions for acceptance.
Superior performance and in-depth study are hallmarks of the performing arts at Shaker Heights High School. Performances are supplemented by participation in festivals, state and national competitions, and international tours
Shaker’s numerous High School and Middle School bands consistently receive top ratings at regional and state competitions, such as the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA). Shaker has been named a “Best Community for Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation for eight consecutive years.
