The fine and performing arts are considered essentials in the Shaker Heights City School District.
All 5th and 6th graders in the district are required to play an instrument as part of the music program. Students may choose to play in the band or the orchestra.There are 8 different bands at Woodbury as well as a jazz band.
Students who choose to continue with band for their music education at the Shaker Middle School can play an instrument in one of the 6 bands and 3 jazz bands.
Superior performance and in-depth study are hallmarks of the performing arts at Shaker Heights High School. Performances are supplemented by participation in festivals, state and national competitions, and international tours.
In recent years, the band has visited Austria, Germany, France, Italy, China and Turkey.
There are 5 concert bands, the marching band and 3 jazz groups at the High School.
Shaker’s numerous High School and Middle School bands consistently receive top ratings at regional and state competitions, such as the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA). Shaker has been named a “Best Community for Music Education” by the NAMM Foundation for eight consecutive years.
